There is a folk song which has a verse: „The world has an Europe, Europe has a Spain, Spain has a garden, the garden is the Canary Islands“. We follow in this spirit and say that the Canary Islands have a pearl which is called
„La Gomera“
For persons wishing to have time away from the madding crowd, La Gomera is the perfect answer. La Gomera is the sixth smallest of the seven islands making up the Tenerife group and was the first to be visited by Christopher Columbus on his way to south America. La Gomera has perpetuated a pure and individual character still valued by visitors. This green island is popular with nature lovers and hikers. Contrasts are the assets of La Gomera. The highest point, "Garajonay" at 1478 meters is one of the major attractions of this volcanic island. Views from La Gomera include the islands of Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro. There are jagged rocks, bizarre pinnacles and columns, basalt organ pipes, discreet pathways and deep valleys. The island is very fertile being in a semi tropical climate. Agricultural products include 100,000 date palm trees, bananas, mangos, papayas, Indian figs, Japanese loquats, and avocados. The flowers and trees that only exist in La Gomera are sources of botanic research curiosity as is the only laurel forest classified by Unesco as a national heritage and nature park. The laurel trees are covered with lichen, moss and ferns are in abundance. Can you imagine the mystical silence that pervades through the forest - broken only by youthful bubbling streams?. Sounds may be heard that appear to be from birds. In fact, these are part of the original language of La Gomera „El Silbo“, still taught in schools. The calls penetrate the valleys and were the only means of communication in historic times.
There are three climate zones in La Gomera. The north is green and fertile, the mountains, sometimes hidden by clouds have hanging growths and in the south you can find areas of desertification. These zones are remarkably close together and a visitor could without difficulty, spend the morning on the beach and the afternoon high up in the mountains. Swimming is possible throughout the year, but care is necessary because the islands are sometimes exposed to waves from the Atlantic ocean.
